Chapter Four

Leanne glanced over at Jake sitting on the wingback chair in her parents’ living room. For the past half hour, he’d sat there, twiddling his thumbs, tapping his foot, and picking lint off the chair. What was up with him? If she didn’t know better, she’d say he was nervous? But why?

As if he sensed her watching him, he turned to her and smiled. All tension seemed to exit from his body as he leaned back. “So, tomorrow’s the big day, huh? Getting cast for your new hand?”

“Yes.” She couldn’t suppress her grin. In a matter of weeks, her myoelectric prosthesis would be constructed and she’d be trained to use it to its full potential. She’d be back in the barn doing everything she used to. “I can’t wait.”

“I’ll miss you tomorrow.”

And she’d miss him. They’d become a team over the past few months, every day milking half the cows together. Eventually, they’d even managed to beat her father on the other side of the barn. And then she’d helped Jake clean the pens. She grew closer and closer to him, on the verge of crossing the line from friends to lovers. But she still worried about winding up with a broken heart, as well as her father’s reaction. And she never found much time to be alone with Jake anyway.

“Just think, I’ll be able to milk the girls without your help. Then we can kick my dad out of the barn and not have to worry about him popping up out of nowhere.”

There’d been numerous times she’d been tucked around a corner with Jake, wanting him to kiss her and more. And as his lips met hers, her father would show up, sending them to do other chores in opposite directions. If she’d been capable of doing more, she would have objected, but her father still owned the farm and signed her paychecks.

“Sounds good.” Jake grinned.

Her father stirred beside her on the couch. “I’m right here. You could at least wait until I’m out of the room.”

She leaned over and patted her father’s arm. “It’s okay, Daddy. I still love you.”

He rolled his eyes. “So you say. It’s like before your accident again. You’re anxious to take over.”

Yes, all thanks to Jake convincing her she could still live her dream, at least with his help. And she couldn’t think of a better person to share the responsibility with. If only she could find some time to be alone with him. Maybe if he asked her out, she’d have an excuse to leave the property and go on a date. What was he waiting for? He barely spent any time at home anymore, except to sleep. If he did have a girlfriend, she didn’t get any of his attention. But was that why he’d never asked her out?

Her mother tucked her knitting needles away and rested a hand on her father’s shoulder. “Let’s go to bed, Harold.”

He glanced up at her, his eyebrows drawn together. “What are you talking about? It’s not even ten.
